On Monday, June 27th, 2022, three days before Sibiu, I got the news that my ex-father-in-law died in Istanbul at the age of 98. The prayer is scheduled for Tuesday 05.07.22 and so I decide to break my hike in Sibiu and take the train to Istanbul.

The way to Sibiu is still quite exciting: before Cărpiniș I see more and more bear tracks on my way. I try to make noise while walking – especially when the forest and bushes get dense – so as not to suddenly stand in front of a surprised animal.

And then, shortly before arriving in the village, I have to descend through a steep section of forest without a path. Suddenly three wolves – or are they wild dogs – cross my path. Luckily they are not interested in me and shortly afterwards I reach the boarding house quite exhausted.

There I get schnapps and natural wine, which the owner produces himself, and I can relax from the exciting day.

Two days later I’m in Sibiu, Hermannstadt. For the last 20 km I unexpectedly get a ride. At a stop at the outdoor shop in Sibiel (www.outdoorsibiel.ro) I get coffee, cherries and water and the offer that Simona, the website manager, will take me to Sibiu.

The old town of Sibiu is really magical, with lively streets and cafes on every corner. There are even more Austrian coffee specialties at Café Wien than I have seen in Vienna. It is an international theater festival with many attractions in the streets and squares.

The hosts of my accommodation (https://sibiulotusapartments.com), a young couple, Romanian and French, have lived in China for a long time and have traveled all over Asia. I meet with Thibaut and get interesting information about his experience.

Then I take the train to Bucharest. I can only get a seat on the train at 3:55 in the morning. So I’m already at 10:00 in the capital of Romania. In the old town, where I have booked a hotel room, there is pub after pub and nightclub, and on every corner a girl touting her café.

I continue to İstanbul by night bus. A 12-hour drive, repeatedly interrupted by lengthy border controls. The border crossings are full, trucks are waiting in front of them in lines stretching for kilometers.

At 6:00am I reach the Central Bus station, take the metro to Aksaray and then walk through the awakening city to the Eminonu ferry terminal. For me, the trip across the Bosporus on the “Vapur” is one of the most beautiful and original things about this city.

The prayer for Tahir Bey takes place in the nursing home. I see Sibel, Banu, her sister Yeşim and her aunt Sanay – now also 96 years old – and other family members. The Hoca „sings“ suras from the Koran, very impressive!

Before the beginning of the Islamic festival of sacrifices „Kurban Bayramı“ I return to Bucharest. I would like to resume my hike in Sibiu in order to reach İstanbul again via the Carpathians and the Danube Delta.

Am Montag, 27.06.2022, drei Tage vor Sibiu, erfahre ich, dass mein Ex-Schwiegervater in Istanbul mit 98 Jahren verstorben ist. Das Gebet ist für Dienstag, 05.07.22, angesetzt und so beschließe ich, meine Wanderung in Sibiu zu unterbrechen und mit dem Zug nach Istanbul zu fahren.

Vermisst: 3 Schafe und 1 Lamm / missed: 3 sheep and 1 lamb

Der Weg nach Sibiu wird noch ziemlich spannend: vor Cărpiniș sehe ich immer mehr Bärenspuren auf meinem Weg. Ich versuche, beim Gehen Geräusche zu machen – besonders wenn Wald und Büsche dichter werden – um nicht plötzlich vor einem überraschten Tier zu stehen.

Wölfe – oder wilde Hunde? / wolves – or wild dogs?

Und dann muss ich, kurz vor Ankunft im Dorf, auch noch durch ein steiles Waldstück ohne Weg absteigen. Plötzlich queren drei Wölfe – oder sind es wilde Hunde – meinen Weg. Zum Glück interessieren sie sich nicht für mich und ich erreiche kurz danach ziemlich erschöpft die Pension.

Dort bekomme ich Schnaps und Naturwein, die der Besitzer selbst herstellt und kann mich so von dem aufregenden Tag erholen.

Zwei Tage später bin ich in Sibiu, Hermannstadt. Für die letzten 20 km erwische ich wieder unerwartet eine Mitfahrgelegenheit. Bei einem Stop im Outdoorladen in Sibiel (www.outdoorsibiel.ro) bekomme ich Kaffee, Kirschen und Wasser und das Angebot, dass mich Simona, die Webseitenbetreuerin, nach Sibiu mitnimmt.

Die Altstadt von Sibiu ist wirklich zauberhaft, die Straßen belebt und Cafés an jeder Ecke. Im Café Wien gibt es sogar mehr österreichische Kaffeespezialitäten als ich in Wien gesehen habe. Es ist gerade internationales Theaterfestival mit vielen Attraktionen auf den Straßen und Plätzen.

Die Gastgeber meiner Unterkunft (https://sibiulotusapartments.com), ein junges Paar, Rumänin und Franzose, haben lange Zeit in China gelebt und schon ganz Asien bereist. Ich treffe mich mit Thibaut erhalte interessante Informationen über seine Erfahrungen.

Dann nehme ich den Zug nach Bukarest. Ich bekomme nur noch einen Platz im Zug um 3:55 Uhr morgens. Also bin ich schon um 10:00 Uhr in der Hauptstadt Rumäniens. In der Altstadt, wo ich ein Hotelzimmer gebucht habe, ist ein Pub, Café und Nachtclub am anderen und an jeder Ecke ein Mädchen, das ihr Café anpreist.

Mit dem Nachtbus fahre ich weiter nach İstanbul. Zwölf Stunden Fahrt, immer wieder unterbrochen durch längere Grenzkontrollen. Die Grenzübergänge sind voll, Lastwagen warten davor in kilometerlangen Schlangen.

Um 6:00 Uhr erreiche ich den Busbahnhof, nehme die Metro bis Aksaray und gehe dann zu Fuß durch die erwachende Stadt zum Fährterminal Eminönü. Die Fahrt über den Bosporus auf dem „Vapur“ gehört für mich zu den schönsten Dingen dieser Stadt.

Das Gebet für Tahir Bey findet im Altenheim statt. Ich sehe Sibel, Banu, ihre Schwester Yeşim und ihre Tante Sanay – jetzt auch schon 96 Jahre alt – und andere Familienmitglieder. Der Hoca „singt“ Suren aus dem Koran, sehr beeindruckend!

Vor Beginn des islamischen Opferfestes „Kurban Bayramı” kehre ich nach Bukarest zurück. Ich möchte in Sibiu meine Wanderung wieder aufnehmen um über die Karpaten und das Donaudelta erneut İstanbul zu erreichen.
